Mexico implements automatic import notice for aluminum products
Mexico's Ministry of Economy establishes new automatic import notice requirements for 42 tariff codes covering aluminum products, including information on smelting, casting, and origin countries. The measure will take effect once the procedure is enabled in the Mexican Digital Foreign Trade Window.

Who is impacted
Importadores de productos de aluminio en bruto, barras, varillas, perfiles, alambre, placas, láminas, tiras, tubos, accesorios y piezas fundidas o forjadas que destinen mercancías a regímenes de importación temporal, importación definitiva, depósito fiscal, elaboración/transformación/reparación en recinto fiscalizado y recinto fiscalizado estratégico.

Mexico's Ministry of Economy published in the Official Gazette (DOF) on April 2, 2026, an Agreement adding Rule 2.2.26 Bis and Section IV to Item 8 of Annex 2.2.1 of the General Rules and Criteria Agreement on Foreign Trade. This new provision establishes an automatic import notice requirement for aluminum products.
The automatic notice applies to 42 tariff codes covering unwrought aluminum, bars, rods, profiles, wire, plates, sheets, strips, tubes, fittings, and cast or forged parts. The measure affects goods destined for temporary import, definitive import, fiscal deposit, processing/transformation/repair in bonded premises, and strategic bonded premises regimes.
Among the most relevant requirements is the obligation to declare the aluminum production chain: the smelting country where alumina is transformed into metallic aluminum, the casting country where liquid aluminum is molded, the country of origin where the final product is manufactured, and the exporting country to Mexico. Detailed technical information is also required including aluminum type, dimensions, coating, finish, and unit price in dollars per kilogram.
The Ministry of Economy reserves the right to verify the accuracy of information provided in accordance with Rule 1.3.9. The Agreement will enter into force once the procedure is enabled in the Mexican Digital Foreign Trade Window, which will be communicated through a notice on the SNICE portal (www.snice.gob.mx). This measure aligns with international efforts to increase traceability of aluminum products and prevent circumvention of trade restrictions.
